Call of Duty: World at War is a first-person shooter video game developed by Treyarch and published by Activision for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation 2. It is the fifth installment in the main Call of Duty series. The game is set in the Pacific theater and Eastern front of World War II. The game shipped in North America on November 11, 2008and in Europe on November 14, 2008.
First Impressions: After the outing with Modern Warfare, I was a little bit worried about changing back to the old era of World War 2, after so many outings before. Instead of trying out solo play first, I just jumped straight into multiplayer, and started my evil ways as a sniper.
I had a good few amount of rounds under my belt taking many heads off with my trusty sniper, while trying out all the new kill streak perks, which were Artillery support and dogs, Dogs are just great, only problem is that they are a pain in the ass if they are on your ass and you have 3 of them coming at you!
The introduction of tanks was very good, sometimes it could turn the tide in your favour if you had a tank, or could turn the whole battle against you if you were just crap at using them.
Graphics: Well I do have to say, the difference in graphics from the last Call of Duty game is not that much different, there have been some tweaks, but you have to look hard for them. I do like the fact the tree snipers are well hidden and you can’t see them till their gun muzzle flashes, which is a very nice touch! I also love that limbs blow off the player when you die from a bomb or tank shell, when you see an arm missing after you die it makes you feel like you die a solider death! (Unless you been tea bagged by some cocky little git)
All in all they didn’t have that much time to work on something completely different from 4 but they have given it their best shot, and I would be happy with the results.
Sound: The sounds effects are great, each gun has its own unique sound, and the explosions are great, tanks sound effects aren’t too bad, there is not much music to get you going but at the end of the day it is all about the sound effects of the guns and explosions to deliver the war atmosphere to your ears, if you have surround sound, by all means enjoy the experience that World at War can deliver
Longevity: The length of the solo play is not very long, if you have a day off you could easy get through the game. The part that makes the game last so long is multiplayer which is not a bad thing, you have co-op story mode and full on multiplayer battles with modes including war, team death match, free for all, search and destroy and so on all with certain player limits (Ground War has the highest set 12-18 players). There are 65 Levels and 10 Prestige Levels, levelling up is the same as Call of Duty 4. (Though in 4 you had to level to 55)
Overall: The only difference between 4 and World at War is time setting, and a few perks changes and kill streak perks changes, other that, it is more or less the same style of game, not that is it a bad thing, why change something that really good and loads of people love to play? Though you could say why make the same game again?
I was impressed with the story, but the one reason I got the next Call of Duty is the multiplayer, like most Call of Duty fans multiplayer is the key to this game, no one would buy Call of Duty 4 or World At War just for the solo Story. The one problem which is getting very annoying, is the multiplayer, trying to find matches and migrating the host when someone leaves 9/10 times you have to research for another room to go in which I find very annoying, I think if you’re the host of the game it should tell you, of course not show anyone else as they won’t be annoyed at you when you leave before the game starts, and they need to work on the server bugs, a lot of disconnects after matches and server errors, which they could patch very soon. (We hope!)
To sum things up if you want to same feel that you had with Modern Warfare but with a World War 2 setting, then this will be for you, but this is a title that must be in your game collection without a doubt.
